As I do not have a good picture of Alberta, I am posting her grandchildren Richard, Diane and Frederick II
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon soda
Pour over:
1 cup of chopped dates
cool
Cream together:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
Add:
the date mixture
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix lightly and bake at 350 degrees F till a toothpick comes out clean.
This keeps well and is moist.
There is no pan size given and no time for baking.
